Be sure to head down to Zilker Park on March 6th for the annual Zilker Kite Festival – it’s free, pet-friendly, and a perfect way to kick off springtime in Austin at one of Blairfield Realty’s favorite Austin spots!
The Zilker Kite Festival, or the “Kite Tournament,” as it was originally called, has been an annual event since it was created in 1929 by The Exchange Club of Austin. It was first held in Lamar Park, which is thought to have been near the intersection of Congress Avenue and South First Street. In 1936, the Exchange Club partnered with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation to host the event, and the tournament was moved to Zilker Park.
Today, event-goers can bring a blanket and settle in to watch hundreds of kites dot the Austin sky, or they can enter the kite contest with a homemade single line kite. There’s no entry fee, and categories include a kids’ 50-yard dash, highest angle kite, steadiest kite, strongest pulling kite, smallest kite, most unusual kite, largest kite, and oldest and youngest kite fliers. And they’ll be supporting a good cause as well: proceeds from the event support Communities in Schools of Central Texas, a non-profit with the mission of reducing the dropout rate and helping students succeed.
For more information about transportation options to and from the park, food and vendor booths, a schedule and more, visit the Zilker Kite Festival website.
