As Austin residents know, Austin’s title of “Live Music Capital of the World” is well-earned, with concerts at venues large and small happening nearly every day of the year. And when summer rolls around, Austinites love to mix their live music with the great outdoors. KGSR’s Blues on the Green, a monthly concert series held on Zilker Park’s great lawn, delivers that winning combination. The series, which takes place on four Wednesdays from May to August, attracts a wide cross-section of music lovers. Thanks to numerous local sponsors and the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Blues on the Green offers a no-cost, family-friendly way to see prominent local artists as well as emerging newer acts.
This year’s concert series kicks off on May 25 with a salute to Antone’s, Austin’s legendary blues venue. The lineup will feature organ specialist Mike Flanigin teaming up with ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Jimmie Vaughn (older brother of Stevie Ray and one-time member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds), and Charlie Sexton, so you can expect plenty of guitar pyrotechnics. The supporting cast includes the Peterson Brothers, two teenagers from Bastrop who are carrying the mantle for blues to a whole new generation.
June 22 will feature the more indie and eclectic sounds of Wild Child and Max Frost. July 13 will get twangy, with Carson McHone opening and alt-country star Hayes Carll headlining. And performing at the series finale on August 3 will be Sweet Spirit and The Suffers.
Planning on heading down to the park for one of the shows? Feel free to bring your own water, blankets, lawn chairs, and even your dog (on a leash) – but leave your alcohol, glass and Styrofoam at home. Prefer to travel light? You can purchase food and non-alcoholic beverages from the numerous vendor booths. If the skies look cloudy, don’t fret because unless there is lightning and torrential rain, the concerts typically go on. For all the details, visit the official site of Blues on the Green.
Get ready to celebrate the 26th season of Blues on the Green – four nights of great music in a great setting, with Austin’s beautiful downtown skyline as a backdrop for the stage. The folks at Blairfield Realty hope to see you down at the park!
