It’s festival season in Austin! Right on the heels of SXSW comes Art City Austin 2017, Art Alliance Austin’s three-day art fair and festival, happening March 31-April 2. Now in its 67th year, the festival attracts both local and national artists and is considered by many to be the Austin art event of the year.
In its inaugural year, 1950, Art City Austin was known as “Art Mart” and was held at the old City Coliseum. Next, the event moved to Laguna Gloria, where it eventually became known as “Fiesta.” From 2009-2015, the festival was held along Cesar Chavez near City Hall. Finally, in 2016, Art City Austin came full circle, relocating to the site of its original home at the new Palmer Events Center.
This year, festival-goers will be able to view a wide array of pieces by 125 artists—created using materials ranging from paint, photography, metal and wood; to sculpture, paper, fiber and succulents—as they stroll the beautiful grounds of the Palmer Auditorium. Attractions will include multiple art installations created by local artists and commissioned specifically for the occasion by Art Alliance Austin. And inside the exhibition hall, additional works by 20 galleries from across Texas will be on display.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase, and of course, it wouldn’t be Austin without live music! So grab the kids and head to the Palmer Event Center at 900 Barton Springs Road for this family-friendly event. Children 12 and under get in free; adults pay $10 general admission, and $25 gets you access to the Friday VIP party and re-entry all weekend.
