Castlewood Forest: A hidden gem in Southwest Austin
If you drive or stroll through Castlewood Forest, it’s not difficult to imagine how this Southwest Austin neighborhood got its name. A well-established subdivision, it boasts magnificent old trees, a secluded suburban setting and large, shady lawns. And with little through traffic, you’ll often see residents out walking and enjoying the peace and quiet its setting affords.
Castlewood Forest is located on the west side of Manchaca Road between W. Slaughter and Davis, with main neighborhood entrances from Davis Lane at Collingwood Drive, and from Manchaca Road at Crownspoint or Monarch Drive. The houses in the neighborhood range in size from 1,800 to 3,000 square feet, many with beamed ceilings, large (1/3 – 1/2 acre) lots, and private fenced backyards. They primarily date back to the 1970s, when Castlewood was home to many families stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base. Today, you’ll run across retired military men and women who liked the area so much that they never left.Â
Nearby amenities include restaurants and shopping on Slaughter Lane and Southpark Meadows, and great public pools at Ditmar City Park and Tanglewood Forest. Residents are also close to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, hiking at the Bauerle Ranch at Slaughter Creek greenbelt, and major transportation arteries such as MoPac and IH-35.
The school-aged crowd in Castlewood Forest attends Cowan Elementary, Bailey Middle School and Akins High School. Nearby daycare and private school options include including Strickland Christian School (K-8) and Stepping Stone School (infant-pre K).
