Buying or selling a home can be overwhelming for anyone, and the financial and emotional challenges of leaving a long-time home for eldercare or another living arrangement often intensify that anxiety. At Blairfield Realty, we’ve helped numerous senior clients with their real estate transactions over the years, but we wanted to learn more about how life stages impact real estate choices, and how to work most effectively with mature clients and their adult children.
That’s why Blairfield Realty agent Monica Blackburn and I, Donna Blair, recently attended a Senior Real Estate Specialist® course to earn our SRES® designation. Over the two-day course, we developed business skills and resources to better serve our clients in the 50+ real estate market, and to help make sure their next living situation meets their current and future needs.
While we focused on the Silent Generation and Baby Boomers, we also explored all six living generations and their characteristics. We learned the difference between working with seniors and their adult children, including the right questions to ask each group. We discussed the often widely disparate needs among the different demographics we serve.
The SRES® challenged us to consider what 21st century retirement looks like. We talked about some of the unique aspects of real estate transactions for senior clients, including the use of pensions, 401K accounts, and IRAs as financing options. We also took a close look at tax and legal matters as well as marketing and outreach specific to this demographic.
Over time, we’ve amassed a wealth of resources that we hope will help ease transition for senior clients. These include assisted living and long-term care options, qualified home inspectors, movers, and elder law attorneys. One simple but very effective tool is this executor’s dream list: a handy checklist to help you start preparing for the future. It’s never too early to get organized, whatever your age!
