With warmer weather on the way and daylight savings time already here, it’s time to get out and enjoy Austin’s lovely evening hours. A great activity for the whole family is Austin Parks Foundation’s Movies in the Park series, which features free outdoor film screenings in local parks. In partnership with the Alamo Drafthouse’s Rolling Roadshow, APF will present this popular summer event for the 10th year.
With a goal of providing free outdoor entertainment to all Austinites, Movies in the Park will screen eight movies on selected nights starting on Saturday, April 13 and running through mid-October. Films will begin just after sunset and will be shown on the Alamo’s fabled inflatable portable big screen.
Bring your own chairs and blankets to relax and enjoy the festivities. You can also bring your own food or take advantage of the local food trucks that will be set up on site. Pets are even welcome as long as they are kept on leashes. Some things are prohibited though, including smoking, alcohol, and Styrofoam and glass containers.
The next screening will take place on April 13 at Zilker Park with Zoolander, followed on The Road to El Dorado at Dick Nichols Park on Friday, May 3. Also taking place in May is The Little Mermaid at Dove Springs Park on Thursday the 23rd.
June will feature Clueless at Palm Park on Thursday the 6th and Angels in the Outfield at Parque Zaragoza on Thursday the 20th. Thursday, July 11 will feature Space Jam at Martin Park (next to Martin Middle School). The series will skip the month of August before resuming on Friday, September 13 with Freaky Friday at Dottie Jordan Park and Recreation Center. The final event will take place on Thursday, October 17 with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at Duncan Park.In case of rain, APF has alternative dates set aside for each screening.
