On April 11, the Austin City Council unanimously adopted the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP). This new city-wide transportation plan, which is designed to make it easier to get around Austin, has been in the works for more than two years now—and it’s been a long time coming. Twenty-four years have passed since the city’s last transportation plan, the Austin Metropolitan Area Transportation Plan, was approved in 1995. Since then, not only has the city’s population doubled, but Austin has also seen the advent of ride hailing, bike sharing, scooters, and more.
The ASMP provides a strategic, comprehensive plan that will guide our transportation policies, programs, projects, and investments for the next 20+ years. It covers all the ways we get around Austin—from driving, walking, and bicycling, to taking public transportation like buses and trains—under one plan. One of its primary aims is to reduce the number of people who drive alone by exploring ways to make roads, bike lanes, bus routes, and sidewalks more efficient and accessible.
