Celebrating outside-the-box, innovative, and irreverent thinking … and homes!
Do you love looking at homes around Austin as much as we do? Here’s another tour to add to your calendar: the Weird Homes Tour®! Happening on April 20, the self-paced, self-driving tour will take you inside homes of collectors of oddities, rare art collectors, performance artists, painters, sculptors and architects who push the boundaries of design.
Founded in 2014 in Austin by the husband and wife team of David J. and Chelle Neff, the Weird Homes Tour brings together mission-driven, community minded event veterans who are dedicated to making a difference in their community. The stated purpose of the tour is to “showcase the places that make cities fun, irreverent and strange, and to give people a glimpse into these authentic dwellings, many of them home to local artists, performers, and creatives.” Since its inception, the event has expanded to Houston, New Orleans, Portland, and Detroit.
Tickets to the tour start at $35, with 10% of the proceeds going to affordable housing nonprofits in the cities where the tours take place. This year, Austin ticket sales will benefit LifeWorks, which provides a pathway to self-sufficiency for more than 4,000 local youth and families each year—many of whom are facing life’s most difficult challenges, including homelessness, trauma, and abuse.Visit the website to check out some of the homes showcased so far. Then buy a ticket, grab some friends and a map, and join in the fun!
