Design Trends: What’s in Store for 2017

If the countdown to 2017 is making you think about turning over a new leaf, one place to direct your energy is toward beautifying your home. But where to start? Here are some of the trends design experts are predicting for the coming year.

Materials that add warmth and texture to spaces – Think matte terra cotta tiles, cork, and natural textures such as cane and rattan.

Jewel tones – Say hello to dark green, purple, and blue upholstery. Or make a bold statement with one of the paint colors that Leatrice (Lee) Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, predicts will be popular in 2017. They’re bright and comfortable – and with names like Pink Yarrow, Red Dahlia, Orange Chiffon, Brandied Melon, and Grape Kiss, how can they not evoke a certain feeling?

Transparent fabrics, floaty silks and sheers – These materials add an optimism, lightness and soft, romantic element to your living space.

Mixed metals – Some designers are predicting that cool and warm metallics, with a few neutral metals like iron and oil rubbed bronze thrown in, will be all the rage. They see a shift away from the shiny, polished look in favor of more steel and burnished, oxidized metal. One way in which this trend may play out is in appliances: black stainless steel is gaining in popularity as an alternative to the more ubiquitous shiny stainless steel.

Upholstered bedheads – Looking for an easy way to add a touch of luxury and glamour to your bedroom? Fabric headboards can update your decor, whether you prefer a classic model in a neutral color with buttons, or a plush one in velvet.

Digital-free zones – Dedicated reading areas, with not a screen in sight, are providing homeowners a much-needed respite from the constant barrage of technology.

Terrazzo – Chips of quartz, granite or glass give this material its distinctive speckled look, and it’s showing up more as a floor and wall surface, as well as in accessories such as tiles and bowls. Some designers predict it will take the place of marble, which they say has seen its heyday – at least until the next set of trends rolls around!
